What is a Mechanical Engineer? (Career Profile)

Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, manufacture and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices.  They work on power-producing machines such as electricity-producing generators, internal combustion engines, steam and gas turbines, and jet and rocket engines.  They also develop power-using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, robots used in manufacturing, machine tools, materials handling systems, and industrial production equipment.  Mechanical engineers also design tools needed by other engineers for their work.  Many Mechanical Engineers work in the power industry where they provide support in operation, maintenance, quality assurance and control and engineering.  The power industry provides electrical power to the world.

Mechanical engineers work in many industries and their work varies by industry and function. Some specialties include applied mechanics; computer-aided design and manufacturing; energy systems; pressure vessels and piping; and heating, refrigeration, and air-conditioning systems. Mechanical engineering is the broadest engineering discipline, extending across many interdependent specialties. Mechanical engineers may work in production operations, maintenance, or technical sales; many are administrators or managers.

Mechanical engineers use the same basic principles as aeronautical engineers but use them to solve problems in different applications. For example, an aeronautical engineer may be interested in the air flow over aircraft wings, whereas the mechanical engineer may need to know the effect of flow through gas turbine blades or over the body of a car. Mechanical Engineering is an attractive alternative for the student who is interested in aeronautics but may wish to look at the wider application of engineering principles. It may equally appeal to the student who wishes to enter aerospace activities with an emphasis on engineering developments.

For free calculations go to the Calculator page.  The calculators should be used with caution.  Many of these calculators are not verified and are only intended to provide for a starting point in performing a design calculations.  All final design calculations should  be performed using verified and validated programs or calculators that have documented evidence of the verification and validation.
